Project GR-AI-N seeks to harness the potential of discarded materials from the wood industry. Computer vision is used for the creation of accurate 3D point clouds of irregular offcuts. These pieces are subsequently transformed into meaningful objects.

Working With Waste Streams

Today, the challenge of managing significant amounts of leftover pieces generated from primary and industrial processes persists, often resulting in unsustainable disposal methods.

In this research we evaluate wood waste before its disposal, diverting it from decaying, shredding or burning. By repurposing this material into unique purposeful products we extend the retention of captured CO2 for as long as possible.

Creating a catalogue

Robotic scanning and manipulation

By implementing a robotic scanning workflow, we achieve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability in the wood offcut scanning process. Our workflow incorporates a dual end effector comprised by vacuum grippers and a high-resolution depth camera for capturing information of the offcuts for detailed analysis.

There is still value in these leftover pieces. We explore their efficient re-use in product design.
